15 Best Netflix TV Shows for Binge-Watching

I know finding something good to watch on Netflix can be a daunting task at times but lucky for you – I’ve had plenty of free time on my hands to sift through the garbage for you. With a husband in the military working long hours and being sent away for months at a time, I’ve become something of an expert at TV show binge-watching. The key is to stick it out at least the first three episodes before you decide if you’re interested or not. Sometimes it takes awhile to get hooked, but once you are, there’s no turning back. Sometimes living under a rock isn’t so bad.

Warning: This may take over your life a little.

1. One Tree Hill – (All 9 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 9.59.55 AM

This is one of those shows that I wish I could go back to the beginning and watch it all over again without knowing what happens. I teared up at the last episode… just because it was the last episode, EVER. Also, there are 9 seasons of it – all available on Netflix. A must-see.

2. Gossip Girl – (All 6 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.01.52 AM

I wasn’t sure about this one at the beginning – seemed a little ridiculous at first. And who the heck is this creepy blogger that’s up in everyone’s business? But once you’re in, you’re IN. Maybe worth re-watching just to put everything together once its done & the secrets are out.

3. Breaking Bad – (All 5 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.02.35 AM

A little bit darker than the first two shows, but I think anyone who has watched this has most likely finished the whole series in a very short amount of time. A high school teacher turned drug lord? Definitely binge-worthy.

4. Sons of Anarchy

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.03.22 AM

I never thought of myself as a “biker chick” but this show makes me reevaluate that decision. I’m not that into action & gang business, but the personal lives of these guys is fascinating enough to keep watching.

5. Arrow

Look at the cover.

6. Revenge

Screen Shot 2014-01-01 at 7.57.08 PM

It’s interesting to see life in the eyes of really, really, ridiculously rich people. And the tables are always turning on this one. Take a trip to the Hamptons with Amanda, I mean, Emily in this vengeance motivated drama.

7. Pretty Little Liars

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.07.28 AM

A little unrealistic at times, but the scandalous lives of these teens make me reevaluate my entire high school career as utterly uneventful. In a good way.

8. Lost – (All 6 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.07.50 AM

At times you will feel completely lost. But that’s not always a bad thing?

9. The Tudors – (All 4 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.08.41 AM

I wish my Advanced Placement European History teacher would have let us watch this show in class. Everything would have made much more sense. And I would have at least remembered something from the class. A good watch for anyone interested in the scandalous life of King Henry VIII. Yeah, that one who beheads his wives.

10. Jericho – (Both seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.09.38 AM

My hubby loves anything that has to do with survival/living off the land. So we watched this short-lived series and it turned out to be pretty dang good. Hopefully its not relevant to the real-world U.S.

11. Brothers & Sisters – (All 5 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.10.50 AM

A tangled web of a family with 5 siblings all grown up leading their own lives with loads of scandal. Which just happens to be really entertaining. You learn to love and hate all the characters at once. That’s powerful.

12. How I Met Your Mother – (All 9 Seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-09-19 at 3.34.47 PM

I’m still grieving the end of this show. My husband and I watched it every night right before bed (usually multiple in a row) and we recently finished the ninth season. We’ve come to the conclusion that we will never be able to replace this one. Here’s to hoping they go through with the “How I Met Your Dad” series.

13. Vampire Diaries

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.11.45 AM

I know, I know. Vampires are dumb. But this show is just so addicting. Love triangles are never fun, unless it includes two vampires and a doppleganger. Yeah… just watch it.

14. The Walking Dead

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.12.32 AM

For the zombie fanatics.

15. Friday Night Lights – (All 5 seasons on Netflix)

Screen Shot 2014-10-07 at 10.13.24 AM

I haven’t watched this one yet, but I love football & I love some good drama that doesn’t pertain to me so it’s on my watch-list. Yes I have lists for everything.

Enjoy, and have fun doing absolutely NOTHING productive for awhile. It’s worth it.

Thanks for your suggestions! I rarely watch anything (like an hour or less a week), but have been looking for ideas for when I’m stuck inside on the unbearably boring treadmill (I run regularly, preferably outside).

I started watching Revenge last week and only have 2 episodes left in season 2. Now I don’t know what to do! What do you do when you run out of episodes to watch? Move to a different tv series??? I will probably get a free hulu plus trial or something to get caught up with the beginning of season 3!

      Hi, Cassie –
I’m so glad you enjoyed my suggestions! Take it from me, “binge” watching TV series can be very addicting! And yes, I have about 5 shows that I keep up with as new episodes come out and once I run out of those (seems to be happening more and more), I try to find a new series that I’ll like. One trick I have for finding new series is going to Hulu and type in the show that you really like, go to it’s main page (where it has recent episodes, and clips, etc) and scroll down toward the bottom. There they have a section “YOU MAY ALSO LIKE” and it shows a bunch of shows that are similar to the shows that you like. I’ve found it to be pretty spot on, too. For example, if you go to the homepage of “Revenge” it lists shows like “Hart of Dixie,” or “Vampire Diaries,” both of which I like. They’re very different shows but they tend to appeal to the same type of audiences! So its kind of an intricate web of addiction. 🙂
Thanks for reading & good luck!

Have you caught up with Revenge? I just finished watching all 7 episodes, it was so worth the wait. Now, I’m looking for a suitable replacement.

We just got a blue-ray player with Internet and discovered the world of Netflix on demand. It has changed out lives. How did we ever live without episodes of “Our Cat From Hell” and “The Walking Dead?” I shudder when I think of all those wasted years… 😉 Thanks for these great shows to watch — they are on my list!

Great list. I have watched about half of those. One Tree Hill being my favorite on the list, but you left off a very watched series on Netflix that you shouldn’t slog through life without watching. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (7 seasons) is the very best series of all the shows on Netflix I have ever watched. It covers so many things. Female empowerment, love, friendship, bravery, acceptance etc. I know the title of the show sounds stupid but I promise, the show is not stupid at all 🙂 Also, another good series is Bones.

Honestly, I loved Dawson’s Creek when I was a pre-teen, but I tried binge-watching it a couple years ago & I just couldn’t take it. The drama was more middle school age appropriate. BUT the later seasons are definitely a must-watch.

I’ve watched Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Dexter. I’ve noticed that no one has mentioned Dexter but it’s also a great show.

I found them a few years ago on Netflix. They are the best! Absolutely love them. Try “you are Beautiful ” first. Then Secret Garden. Enjoy.

Thanks for the suggestions! Think I will try Revenge. I JUST finished five seasons of Scandal which literally took OVER MY LIFE! The last episode was bittersweet as I needed to get back to taking showers and getting dressed (ha! ha!). MUST SEE! Can’t wait for next season to come out! Also binge watched How to Get Away with Murder before Scandal and was also ADDICTED! There is also a weirdly addicting show called Spotless which I needed two full episodes to really get into but that one was surprisingly good!
